Are You Paying Too Much for Your Meds?

Author

Jason Sellers, MD

The cost of medications can be a burden for many, but there’s good news: you have the power to save money on your meds! Medication prices and insurance coverage can vary widely depending on where you purchase your medications and how frequently you refill them. Today we discuss strategies to cut down on your medication expenses and start saving!

At Radish our focus is on your overall physical and mental well-being. If your doctor decides to prescribe a medication for you to take either temporarily or on an ongoing basis, it is important that you are able to access and afford that medication! We are always happy to provide insights on managing medication costs. Today we’d like to give you a little preview on how you can save money on your prescriptions.

1. Communicate with your care team

Your Radish Health Care Team is your strongest ally when it comes to managing medication costs. Openly discuss your financial concerns with your doctor during your virtual consultation. We do our best to only prescribe affordable medications, but if you experience sticker shock when you get to the pharmacy please let us know. It is our priority to find the most effective treatment that fits your health needs and doesn’t break the bank.

2. Opt for generic medications when possible

Generic drugs are equally as safe and effective as their brand-name counterparts and usually come at a fraction of the cost. It’s a win-win, so we always send generics whenever possible. It’s also a great rule of thumb when picking up any over-the-counter medications!

3. Compare prices and discounts

Prices for medications and insurance coverage can vary significantly from one pharmacy to the next. We’re happy to help you find the best solution, and in some cases we may even advise you to use a discount card to reduce the cost of your medication. You might be surprised that sometimes the discount is even cheaper than insurance!

4. Consider mail-order pharmacies

Many health plans provide your ongoing medications at a highly discounted rate if you get them from the preferred mail-order pharmacy. This can be a convenient and more cost-effective option for medications you take regularly. If you’re not sure where to start, just chat with us for further guidance!

5. Ask for 90-day prescriptions when appropriate

Similar to mail-order pharmacies, your health plan may also offer discounts if you receive your regular medications as a 90-day supply instead of the usual 30-day supply. This can lead to significant savings over time.

6. Ask your Radish doctor about free medications

In some cases, we may be able to prescribe common acute care medications such as antibiotics and steroid creams free of charge. There are certain limitations, but please feel free to ask your Radish doctor if this is an option for you!

There are many strategies out there to save on medication costs, but at Radish Health you do not have to do the heavy lifting! Let us help manage these expenses by chatting with your Radish Health Care Coordinator today. Remember, we are here to support you every step of the way. Wishing you good health and happiness always!
