We talked with Dr. Megan McGinn about her life outside of work, what she enjoys doing in her free time, and why she chose to become a psychologist. Check out our conversation below!
A: In today’s world of social media and unusually high external pressure to fit in, I’m inspired by people who stay true to themselves, who are not afraid to take an unpopular stance, and who are slow to judge others.
A: I love great songwriters who capture the moods of certain periods of history, like Bob Dylan, and in general music from the 1960s and 70s. I think I would have been in my element as a flower child.
A: What’s the best place you’ve traveled to? I can’t resist a beautiful beach so I would say Railay Bay in Thailand was both stunning and serene. In terms of culture and people-watching, I love being here in New York City.
A: On the weekends I spend time with my dog walking around the city and exploring places I haven’t been before. I love a nice long dinner out with friends. I also love going anywhere I can dance.
A: The most exciting part about being a psychologist is the privilege of getting to know people on such a deep and profound level. On the surface, we all seem so different, but as you peel back the layers, everyone becomes very relatable, as it is obvious that we are all connected by the same fears and desires.
A: As I was growing up, I thought I wanted to be a writer, but I found it to be isolating. I realized I liked writing because I have such an interest in people’s internal worlds, i.e., what makes them tick. So I went from writing to working as a social worker with the people I found most interesting— criminals— to becoming a psychologist.
